Information

This four-arm candlestick was designed by Gunnar Ander and produced by Ystad Metall in Sweden during the 1950s. It exemplifies Scandinavian mid-century metal craftsmanship by combining functional utility with a sculptural, decorative form that integrates wrought iron and glass elements.

Constructed from black lacquered wrought iron, the candlestick features a symmetrical frame with four upright arms ending in conical candle holders. Below each holder, integrated into the horizontal connecting bar, are four round green glass insets. A fifth, square glass inset is positioned on the central vertical stem. The vivid green glass contrasts strikingly with the matte black metal, adding a luminous accent that enhances both decoration and structure.

The design is visually architectural, with the upper frame balanced by four curved legs that provide stability and elevate the piece. The geometric clarity of the form, combined with precise glass placement, reflects Ander’s approach to blending modernist principles with decorative warmth.

The candlestick is in good condition, showing wear consistent with age and use. The iron surfaces have minor patination and scattered marks, while the glass insets remain intact with original color and luster. The overall structure is stable and free from deformation.

Gunnar Ander (1908–1976) was a notable Swedish designer and architect, renowned for his lighting, candlesticks, and decorative objects. His work with Ystad Metall often combined wrought iron with colored glass or brass, showcasing a high level of craftsmanship and artistic metalwork. Ystad Metall was a leading Swedish metalworks company throughout much of the 20th century, respected for its quality and design.

The candlestick measures 28.5 centimeters wide, 15 centimeters deep, and 32.5 centimeters high (approximately 11.2 by 5.9 by 12.8 inches).
