Svend Aage Holm Sørensen candlestick
This rare candlestick was designed by Svend Aage Holm Sørensen and produced by Holm Sørensen & Co. in Denmark during the 1960s. Constructed from iron and brass, the piece features a biomorphic, expressive form characteristic of mid-century Scandinavian design. It supports six candle holders, each elevated on slender, branch-like arms that curve outward and upward from a central bundle, creating a tree-like silhouette. The cylindrical holders are topped with flat drip trays, all rendered in iron with a worn finish.
The central section is tightly wrapped with a coil of brass wire, which visually anchors the composition and provides a decorative contrast to the matte black surface of the arms and legs. The base consists of six bent metal rods that extend downward and outward, forming a tripod-like support that enhances both stability and the dynamic visual effect of the piece.
Svend Aage Holm Sørensen (1913–2004) was a Danish designer renowned for his lighting and sculptural metalwork. Active during the Danish modern movement, his designs often merged industrial materials with organic forms. This candlestick exemplifies his fusion of handcrafted detail with architectural geometry and reflects the influence of post-war European modernism in its expressive yet functional composition.
Holm Sørensen & Co., the manufacturer, played a key role in introducing Holm Sørensen’s work to an international market, producing a range of utilitarian and decorative brass and wrought metal objects.
The candlestick shows age-related wear, including scratches, minor lacquer loss, and oxidation consistent with its vintage status, adding to its character and authenticity.
Its dimensions are 22 centimeters in diameter and 32 centimeters in height (approximately 8.7 by 12.6 inches).
