Lillemor Mannerheim vase
This rare floor vase, model Mangania, was designed by Lillemor Mannerheim and produced by Upsala Ekeby in Sweden during the 1950s. The vase exemplifies the sculptural fluidity and restrained elegance characteristic of Scandinavian modernist ceramics in the postwar era.
The piece features a tall, swelling ovoid body tapering into a narrow neck that culminates in a distinctive bifurcated lip forming a soft V-shape, introducing dynamic asymmetry to the vessel’s otherwise symmetrical form. The surface is coated in a deep matte black glaze, with subtle charcoal nuances appearing where light gently reflects off the minimally textured finish. Variations at the rim and foot highlight its handcrafted production.
The underside bears the printed Upsala Ekeby studio mark, alongside Lillemor Mannerheim’s signature and the model name “Mangania.” The foot ring remains unglazed, revealing the natural stoneware base.
Lillemor Mannerheim (1927–1994) was a notable Swedish ceramicist who contributed significantly to Upsala Ekeby’s mid-century ceramic innovations. Her designs balance functionality and artistic expression, often exploring sculptural forms and refined glazing techniques. Upsala Ekeby was a key player in Scandinavian ceramics, fostering collaborations with prominent designers to shape the era’s aesthetic.
The vase measures 16 cm in diameter and 42 cm in height (approximately 6.3 x 16.5 inches) and is in excellent vintage condition, showing only minor wear on the base and no structural issues.
