Information

This rare mirror, designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by his own company in Markaryd, Sweden during the 1950s, represents a lesser-known yet refined aspect of his output beyond lighting. Executed in laminated teak, the piece blends utility and sculptural clarity in a compact form, reflecting the broader values of Scandinavian mid-century decorative arts.

The design centers around a circular mirror set within a continuous teak frame, formed by layers of bent and laminated wood. The wood is shaped into a seamless loop that extends vertically into a sculpted neck above and below the reflective surface. These extended sections provide both ergonomic grip and a visual anchor, unifying the object as both hand mirror and wall-mounted decorative piece. The teak frame has pronounced layered edges, subtly visible at the profile, adding structural rhythm and emphasizing the craftsmanship behind its construction.

At the top of the stem, a narrow slot accommodates a leather loop that is knotted to allow suspension. This detail—functional and decorative—provides a natural point of hanging while introducing a contrasting texture. The use of rawhide leather as a suspension element is typical of Jakobsson’s work, wherein small accents take on expressive roles without compromising the purity of the form.

Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009), primarily recognized for his lighting designs, maintained a consistent material language across his work, favoring wood, leather, and brass. Trained as a cabinetmaker and architect, he established his company in Markaryd in 1951 and quickly became known for soft, atmospheric lighting that emphasized craftsmanship and mood. This mirror shares the same material sensibility and construction precision, with teak treated as both structural and decorative, and with a layout that speaks to his architectural training.

The mirror remains in very good original condition. The teak has aged to a warm golden tone and displays minor surface patina consistent with its age. The leather suspension is secure and original. The glass is clear and recessed evenly within the frame, retaining its integrity without distortion or replacement.

The dimensions are 16 cm in width, 1.5 cm in depth, and 39 cm in height (approximately 6.3 x 0.6 x 15.4 inches). This piece is a rare and sculpturally understated example of Jakobsson’s work in wood, exemplifying the tactile refinement and thoughtful utility that define mid-century Scandinavian design.
