Adam Hoff & Poul Østergaard wall valet

This rare wall-mounted valet was designed by Adam Hoff and Poul Østergaard and produced by Virum Møbelsnedkeri in Denmark. The present example is executed in oak with leather retaining straps and a blue-grey backing panel. The original manufacturer’s label remains attached to the back and reads “Virum Møbelsnedkeri, Rasmussen & Brygger, Design Adam Hoff & Poul Østergaard, Mønsterbeskyttet, Made in Denmark” providing direct documentation of both the designers and manufacturer.

The valet is conceived as a compact rectangular wall cabinet that transforms when required. When closed, its functional components sit almost entirely within the oak frame, giving the object a shallow, architectural appearance. A secondary rectangular frame is set slightly inside the outer case, while the central wooden element forms a strongly sculptural silhouette: a straight horizontal rail develops into two deep rounded cut-outs before widening into a long, symmetrical downward curve. Three turned wooden pegs are positioned along the lower rail.

When opened, the inner assembly pivots outward to create a projecting clothes hanger and shelf-like support. Two narrow brown leather straps connect the outer corners of the moving frame to the fixed wall case, controlling and supporting its open position. The broad curved element then hangs below the horizontal plane and functions as a shaped support for a jacket or coat, while the upper structure provides additional space for folded garments and accessories. The three pegs remain accessible for smaller articles. This folding construction allows the valet to provide substantial depth when in use while occupying little wall space when closed.

The woodworking is an important part of the design. The warm golden-brown oak has a pronounced linear grain, contrasted by the cool blue-grey backing panel and medium-brown leather. Exposed finger joints are visible at the corners of both the fixed case and folding frame, making the method of construction deliberately legible. Small wooden plugs and carefully rounded edges continue this emphasis on cabinetmaking rather than concealing the object’s assembly. Comparable examples are likewise documented in solid oak with visible joinery, leather straps and blue-grey backing panels.

Hoff and Østergaard’s design belongs to the Danish modern tradition of combining multiple domestic functions within a compact and materially economical object. Rather than treating the valet simply as a row of hooks, the designers developed it as a piece of transformable furniture. Its geometry moves between the strict rectangular framework of the cabinet and the pronounced organic curve of the hanger, an approach characteristic of Scandinavian furniture in which functional requirements are articulated through softened, carefully resolved wooden forms.

Virum Møbelsnedkeri was the Danish cabinetmaking workshop responsible for producing the design. Surviving examples consistently identify the company as manufacturer and Hoff and Østergaard as designers, while examples occur in oak as well as teak and other woods. The label on the present example is especially useful because it also identifies Rasmussen & Brygger in connection with Virum Møbelsnedkeri and states that the design was “Mønsterbeskyttet,” indicating that the pattern/design was protected in Denmark.

The object remains in good vintage condition with small signs of use. The oak retains a warm, even surface with minor marks, scratches and tonal variation consistent with age. The leather straps show natural surface wear while remaining integral to the folding construction, and the blue-grey backing displays minor marks. The exposed joints, wooden pegs and articulated frame appear well preserved, maintaining the clarity of the original construction.

In its closed position, the valet measures 55.5 cm wide, 6.5 cm deep and 27.5 cm high, corresponding to approximately 21.9 × 2.6 × 10.8 inches. When opened, it measures 55.5 cm wide, 29 cm deep and 37.5 cm high, or approximately 21.9 × 11.4 × 14.8 inches. The considerable difference between its closed and open depth demonstrates the central idea of the design: a fully functional clothes valet condensed into a shallow piece of wall-mounted furniture when not in use.
