Aksel Bender Madsen & Ejner Larsen sofa
This rare bench, also referred to as a sofa, was designed by Ejner Larsen and Aksel Bender Madsen and produced by Næstved Møbler in Denmark in 1957. The piece is crafted from solid teak and newly reupholstered in a vivid blue fabric, creating a striking contrast between the deep warmth of the wood and the cool vibrancy of the textile. The clean geometry, rounded edges, and minimal ornamentation embody the refined Danish modern aesthetic that both designers were known for — emphasizing craftsmanship, proportion, and tactile simplicity.
Ejner Larsen and Aksel Bender Madsen collaborated closely from the late 1940s through the 1970s, developing furniture that balanced ergonomic comfort with architectural clarity. Their work was often produced by master craftsmen such as Næstved Møbler and became hallmarks of postwar Scandinavian design. This bench, with its open frame and floating seat construction, illustrates their shared belief in lightness and human-scaled functionality.
Næstved Møbler was among Denmark’s most respected manufacturers during the mid-20th century, recognized for its exceptional woodwork and collaborations with prominent designers. The company’s use of solid teak, precision joinery, and hand-finished details is evident in this piece, where the natural grain of the wood complements the sculptural linearity of the form.
The bench is in good vintage condition, showing small signs of usage consistent with age. It has been reupholstered with care to preserve the integrity of its original proportions and character.
