Alf Svensson ceiling lamp
This rare ceiling lamp was designed by Swedish designer Alf Svensson and produced by Bergboms in Sweden during the 1950s. It exemplifies functional Scandinavian mid-century modern lighting, characterized by clean lines, practical construction, and a balanced use of materials. The lamp features a wide, shallow conical shade made of lacquered metal, finished in a pale beige or off-white tone typical of the restrained color palette of the era.
The form includes a large circular shade with a slightly upward-tilted edge. Beneath this sits a textured, semi-spherical diffuser made of frosted plastic. The light source is partially recessed, providing both downward illumination and an ambient glow. Above the shade, a finned ventilated cap in matching lacquered metal connects to the height-adjustment mechanism. This system consists of a vertical cylindrical counterweight and twin pulley wheels with a natural cord, allowing smooth elevation control.
The lamp shows signs of age and use, including minor surface marks and light patina on the lacquered surfaces. The original electrical components appear intact and functional.
Alf Svensson was a prominent figure in Swedish post-war design, known for combining modernist aesthetics with user-focused functionality in both furniture and lighting. Bergboms, active from the 1940s to the 1970s, was a key Swedish manufacturer collaborating with leading Scandinavian designers to produce high-quality, collectible lighting.
The lamp measures 61 centimeters in diameter and is height adjustable from 115 to 180 centimeters (approximately 24 inches wide by 45.3 to 70.9 inches in height).
