Information

This is a rare pair of Model 400 “Tank” chairs designed by Finnish architect and designer Alvar Aalto. The chairs are constructed from laminated bent elm, a hallmark of Aalto’s innovative wood-bending techniques, which allow for the fluid, continuous curves seen in the broad armrests and cantilevered base. The warm honey tone of the elm complements the newly upholstered seats and backs, covered in a textured wool fabric from Dedar Milano in a light cream tone interwoven with subtle grey flecks. The upholstery presents a soft, tactile surface with a fine irregular weave that enhances the material’s natural character.

The form of the Tank chair, introduced in 1936, embodies Aalto’s functionalist approach infused with organic sensibilities. The generous seat and back are slightly reclined, offering comfort while the continuous sled-like legs and armrests provide a distinctive sculptural silhouette. The design’s name, “Tank” derives from its wide, sturdy arms and robust profile, which were originally conceived to showcase both durability and a modern aesthetic.

Produced by Artek in Finland, the manufacturer Aalto co-founded in 1935 with his wife Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen, and Nils-Gustav Hahl, these chairs represent a key moment in Scandinavian Modernism. Artek’s mission to combine art, technology, and everyday function is evident in the seamless integration of craftsmanship and industrial production. The laminated bentwood process was revolutionary at the time and remains one of Aalto’s most enduring contributions to 20th-century furniture design.

This pair is in good vintage condition, showing small signs of use consistent with age and careful handling. The wooden frames retain a smooth finish with visible grain patterns, while the new upholstery ensures both structural integrity and visual freshness without compromising the historical authenticity of the pieces.

Dimensions are 77 cm in height (30.3 inches), 85 cm in width (33.5 inches), and 69 cm in depth (27.2 inches), with a seat height of 41 cm (16.1 inches).
