Anders Pehrson ceiling lamp

This elegant pendant lamp, designed by Anders Pehrson and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden during the 1960s, is an excellent example of Scandinavian Modern lighting at its most refined. Combining geometric simplicity with warm material contrasts, the design reflects Pehrson’s celebrated approach to functional lighting, where clean architectural forms and carefully considered proportions create a timeless aesthetic that remains as contemporary today as when it was first introduced.

Anders Pehrson (1912–1982) was one of Sweden’s most influential post-war industrial designers. After becoming managing director and chief designer of Ateljé Lyktan in 1964, he transformed the company into one of Scandinavia’s leading lighting manufacturers. Pehrson’s designs are characterised by understated elegance, innovative construction, and exceptional attention to the quality of light. Today his work is regarded as a cornerstone of Swedish modern lighting design and is highly sought after by collectors worldwide.

Founded in Åhus in southern Sweden in 1934, Ateljé Lyktan established an international reputation for producing innovative, high-quality lighting. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the company collaborated closely with Anders Pehrson, resulting in numerous iconic designs that perfectly embody the ideals of Scandinavian Modernism.

This pendant features a softly domed white acrylic diffuser suspended from three slender cream-coloured cords, creating a striking sense of visual lightness. The diffuser is elegantly supported by a central aged brass cylinder with three radiating brass arms that both secure the shade and contribute to the lamp’s sculptural appearance. Matching brass details at the ceiling canopy complete the composition, while the warm patina of the brass provides a beautiful contrast to the crisp white acrylic.

The design exemplifies Pehrson’s ability to balance engineering and aesthetics. The floating hemispherical shade appears almost weightless, while the exposed brass framework introduces a subtle industrial character without compromising the lamp’s clean architectural expression. When illuminated, the acrylic diffuser emits a soft, even glow that creates warm ambient lighting while concealing the light source, making the pendant equally suited for dining rooms, living spaces, or sophisticated commercial interiors.

The lamp remains in good vintage condition with light age-related wear consistent with its history. The brass has developed an attractive natural patina, and the acrylic shade retains an excellent appearance overall. There is a small crack to the rim of the shade, visible in the photographs, which does not affect the lamp’s structural integrity or functionality.
