Andirons
This rare pair of Swedish andirons was produced during the 1960s and executed in wrought iron. Each element is formed as a stylized dragon, combining a sculptural animal motif with a clearly functional construction intended for use in an open fireplace. The pieces are finished in a dark, almost black tone, with a matte surface that emphasizes the forged character of the material.
The design is defined by an elongated horizontal body terminating in a curled circular loop at the rear, while the front rises into an upright dragon head with curved horns and a scroll-like snout detail. The front section is supported by two forged legs with flattened feet, creating a stable three-point stance together with the rear loop. Along the top of the body, a series of spiral-forged rings act as decorative reinforcement elements and contribute to the strong linear rhythm of the silhouette when viewed from the side.
Wrought iron work of this type is closely connected to Scandinavian craft traditions, where blacksmithing remained an important part of interior production well into the mid-century period. In the 1950s and 1960s, Swedish decorative ironwork often combined folkloric or mythological references with modernist simplification, resulting in pieces that are both graphic and sculptural while maintaining a clear practical purpose.
The pair is in good condition, with light wear consistent with age and use. The surface shows minor irregularities and small marks typical of hand-forged ironwork, and these characteristics should be regarded as part of the intended material expression rather than defects.
