Information

This rare pewter vase, model 5496, was designed by Sylvia Stave and produced by C.G. Hallberg in Sweden in 1934. Executed during the height of the Art Deco period, the vase exemplifies the refined geometric language and technical precision that made Stave one of the most important Scandinavian metal designers of the twentieth century. Its restrained elegance and architectural form reflect the transition from decorative classicism toward the streamlined modernism that would come to define Scandinavian design.

The vase features a perfectly balanced spherical body surmounted by a short cylindrical neck and a broad, disc-shaped rim. The entire surface is articulated with finely engine-turned concentric grooves that wrap around the form, creating a subtle interplay of light and shadow across the pewter. A polished central band interrupts the linear decoration, emphasizing the vase’s proportions while providing a visual contrast to the meticulously textured upper and lower sections. The precision of the turning process demonstrates the exceptional craftsmanship for which C.G. Hallberg was renowned.

Sylvia Stave (1908–1994) joined C.G. Hallberg as a remarkably young designer and quickly established herself as one of the leading figures of Swedish Art Deco metalwork. Her designs were characterized by geometric purity, technical sophistication, and a remarkable ability to create visual impact through proportion rather than ornament. During the 1930s she developed a series of innovative pewter objects that remain among the most sought-after examples of Scandinavian decorative arts from the period. Model 5496 is particularly representative of her mature Art Deco aesthetic, combining sculptural simplicity with refined surface treatment.

The vase is stamped on the underside with the mark of C.G. Hallberg together with the model designation, confirming its authenticity and production during the company’s distinguished interwar period. Its compact spherical form and understated decoration embody the functional elegance that would later influence Swedish Modern design while remaining firmly rooted in the luxurious materials and craftsmanship associated with Art Deco.

The pewter has acquired a soft, natural patina over time, enhancing the character of the piece and emphasizing its age. The vase remains in good vintage condition with signs of use and wear consistent with age, including light surface marks and variations in patination that contribute to its authenticity and appeal.
