Angelo Lelii ceiling lamp
This very rare ceiling lamp, model Vela, was designed by Angelo Lelii and produced under license by Bergboms in Sweden during the 1950s. The lamp combines lacquered metal, brass, and nylon threads in a composition that balances sculptural form with practical lighting. A curved brass arm extends from a conical brass ceiling mount, suspending a large white metal shade shaped like a sail that softly diffuses light. Below this, a secondary black metal shade is positioned to direct light upward, creating a visually striking contrast between the two elements.
Angelo Lelii, an influential Italian lighting designer and founder of Arredoluce, was known for his avant-garde and innovative designs. His work often incorporated geometric and organic forms, emphasizing balance and asymmetry. Lelii’s designs are recognized for their refined use of materials and seamless integration into mid-century modern interiors.
Bergboms, a Swedish lighting manufacturer, was noted for its high-quality craftsmanship and collaboration with leading designers. By producing Lelii’s Vela model under license, Bergboms preserved the original design’s character while adapting it for the Scandinavian market. The lamp exemplifies mid-century modernism through its clean lines, contrasting materials, and interplay of light and shadow.
The lamp is in well-preserved vintage condition, with age-related patina visible on the brass components that add to its authentic character. It measures 60 cm in width, 56 cm in depth, and 78 cm in height (23.6 by 22 by 30.7 inches), combining functional lighting with sculptural presence.
