Arne Bang bowl
Rare ceramic bowl designed by Arne Bang and produced in his own workshop in Denmark during the 1950s. The piece is a strong example of Bang’s sculptural approach to stoneware, where form, surface, and glaze are treated as an integrated whole.
The bowl is circular in form with a wide, open mouth and gently rising sides, resting on a subtly defined foot. The exterior is articulated with a rhythmic series of vertical flutes, creating a structured relief that wraps around the entire body. This repeated pattern gives the piece a tactile quality and a sense of movement, while also emphasizing the symmetry and weight of the form. The rim is finished with a softly crenellated edge, echoing the underlying fluted structure.
The glaze is a nuanced greyish-brown with variegated tonal shifts, enriched by subtle green undertones that emerge along the edges and high points of the relief. The surface has a slightly mottled, almost metallic character, typical of Bang’s stoneware, where firing conditions produce depth and variation. The interior is finished in a darker, more uniform tone, creating a quiet contrast to the textured exterior.
The underside retains the natural stoneware body within the foot ring and is marked with the artist’s monogram along with the model number “189” confirming its origin and authorship.
