Arne Hovmand-Olsen armchair
This rare armchair, model 308, is a striking example of mid-century Danish design that merges sculptural sophistication with ergonomic comfort. Designed in 1956 by Arne Hovmand-Olsen, the chair features a gently curved backrest, a round seat, and elegantly tapered legs. The frame is crafted from solid oak and teak, with a warm and subtly contrasting grain. The backrest and seat are upholstered in smooth black leather, creating a sleek visual and tactile contrast with the natural wood.
The most notable element of the design is the organic sweep of the continuous back and armrest, which flows into a Y-shaped rear support. This sculptural form is both aesthetically expressive and structurally efficient, offering support without visual heaviness. The saddle-stitched black leather seat is rounded and slightly convex, reinforcing the chair’s sculptural character while remaining comfortable and minimal in profile.
The chair remains in excellent condition. The wood frame shows minimal signs of wear and retains a rich finish, with subtle patination enhancing the teak and oak’s natural tones. The black leather is clean and tight, without cracks or tears, and maintains a consistent, supple surface.
Arne Hovmand-Olsen was a Danish designer known for his graceful, refined interpretations of modernist principles. He was particularly skilled at combining traditional craftsmanship with fluid, modern forms. His work gained recognition in both Danish and international markets during the 1950s and 1960s, with many of his pieces exported to the United States and Europe. Hovmand-Olsen’s aesthetic aligns with the Danish modern movement’s core values: simplicity, organic materiality, and ergonomic sensitivity.
