Information

This rare pair of side tables, designed by Arne Hovmand-Olsen and produced by Mogens Kold in Denmark, is a refined example of Scandinavian mid-century modern furniture. The design reflects Hovmand-Olsen’s distinctive style, where soft curves, fine materials, and functional elegance are brought together in a cohesive and balanced form.

Crafted from teak, the tables exhibit a warm, medium-brown tone with a natural satin finish that subtly enhances the wood’s expressive grain. The tabletop has a gently curved rectangular profile with softly rounded corners and beveled edges, lending the tables an organic, flowing character. This careful shaping of the top is emblematic of Hovmand-Olsen’s sensitivity to proportion and tactile quality.

Beneath each tabletop is a woven rattan shelf, recessed within the frame. The light tone and texture of the rattan contrast harmoniously with the darker wood, providing both visual interest and practical storage. The craftsmanship of the rattan work is precise and clean, contributing to the tables’ light and airy aesthetic without sacrificing durability or function.

The frame is supported by slender, gently curved legs that taper subtly toward the base. Each leg is smoothly integrated into the apron with finely executed joinery, emphasizing the seamless construction and sculptural coherence of the design. This leg structure not only enhances the tables’ graceful silhouette but also offers a stable and grounded stance.

Arne Hovmand-Olsen (1919–1989) was known for his sculptural approach to furniture, often combining elegant modern forms with artisanal craftsmanship. His collaborations with Mogens Kold produced a number of now highly collectible pieces, valued for their purity of form and attention to detail. These tables exemplify his aesthetic philosophy—organic yet modern, functional yet decorative.

The pair is in excellent vintage condition. The teak surfaces are smooth and show only minimal signs of wear consistent with age. The rattan shelves remain intact, taut, and free from damage. The overall construction is solid, and there are no visible repairs or structural compromises.

Each table measures 67.5 cm in width, 48 cm in depth, and 54 cm in height, which corresponds to approximately 26.6 inches wide, 18.9 inches deep, and 21.3 inches high.
