Arne Jacobsen armchairs
Rare Oxford high-backed chairs, model 3272, designed by Arne Jacobsen and produced by Fritz Hansen in Denmark. Originally designed in 1965 for St. Catherine’s College, Oxford, this model represents Jacobsen’s masterful fusion of sculptural form and functional minimalism. The chairs in this set were manufactured in 1969.
The design features a single-piece molded seat and backrest that rise gracefully into a tall, continuous silhouette. Upholstered in original cognac-brown leather, the surfaces exhibit a rich, natural patina that emphasizes the organic curvature of the form. The chairs are supported by four-star aluminum bases, each fitted with a swivel mechanism. The armrests, also in aluminum, are finished with leather pads for comfort and material harmony.
Arne Jacobsen (1902–1971) was one of the most influential figures in Scandinavian modernism, celebrated for his architectural and furniture designs that combined structural clarity with refined aesthetics. The Oxford series was conceived to complement the architecture of St. Catherine’s College, integrating seamlessly into its modernist interior.
These examples are in good vintage condition with visible signs of wear and age-appropriate patina, enhancing their authenticity and historical character. Dimensions: width 60 cm (23.6 inches), depth 53 cm (20.9 inches), height 127.5 cm (50.2 inches), seat height 44 cm (17.3 inches).
