Information

This rare set of eight dining chairs is attributed to the Swedish designer Axel Einar Hjorth and was produced by Bodafors in Sweden during the 1930s. The chairs are executed in acid-stained pine, a material and finish often associated with Hjorth’s designs of the period, particularly those connected to his functional and rustic modernist approach. The craftsmanship reflects the balance between robust construction and simple, practical forms that defined much of Hjorth’s furniture.

Each chair features a rectilinear construction with slightly splayed legs, a solid pine seat, and a low spindle back with a central carved back support. The design emphasizes utility while incorporating subtle decorative detailing in the shaped central back slat, adding a sculptural quality to the otherwise restrained form. The use of pine, treated with acid-staining, produces a warm, earthy tone with visible grain patterns that enhance the natural texture of the wood, giving the chairs a tactile and organic presence.

The set remains in good vintage condition, showing signs of use and an appealing patina consistent with age. The wear highlights the chairs’ history and adds to their authenticity as pieces from the early 20th century.

Axel Einar Hjorth was an influential Swedish designer, active in the interwar period, known for his ability to bridge neoclassical traditions with functionalist ideals. His work for Bodafors stands as an important chapter in Scandinavian design history, blending rustic simplicity with modernist sensibilities. Bodafors, a leading Swedish furniture manufacturer, was recognized for collaborating with designers like Hjorth to produce high-quality furniture that contributed significantly to the development of Scandinavian modern design.

These chairs are characteristic of Scandinavian mid-century ideals, though designed earlier in the 1930s, and they reflect both a regional rustic tradition and the forward-looking approach of Hjorth’s practice.
