Information

This rare cabinet model “Sport” was designed by Axel Einar Hjorth and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) in Sweden during the 1930s. The piece is constructed from acid-stained pine, a material that Hjorth frequently used in his series of furniture for NK’s Sportstugemöbler, designed for weekend and holiday houses. The pine has been treated to bring out its pronounced grain and warm tone, giving the cabinet a rich amber hue with darker accents in the grain pattern.

The design reflects Hjorth’s blend of rustic craftsmanship and modernist proportions. The cabinet features a rectangular body raised on bracket-shaped feet with softly curved profiles. Its composition is symmetrical and functional, with two drawers at the top, a central section with two doors, and two larger drawers at the base. The handles are integral and carved from solid pine, contributing to the piece’s cohesive and handcrafted aesthetic. Inside, the storage is divided by adjustable shelving, reflecting practical considerations typical of Hjorth’s furniture for rural interiors.

The cabinet retains the original NK metal label on the back, authenticating its production by Nordiska Kompaniet. The surface shows a consistent patina from age, with minor marks and wear that are characteristic of the material and period, adding depth and character to the wood. Overall, it is in excellent vintage condition with visible signs of age that enhance its natural texture.

Axel Einar Hjorth (1888–1959) was a leading figure in Swedish design between the wars, known for combining the refined craftsmanship of traditional Swedish furniture with the emerging modernist sensibility of the time. His Sport series, introduced around 1930, represented a departure from the more formal interiors of urban Sweden, embracing simplicity and the natural beauty of pine wood suited for leisure homes.

Dimensions: 113 cm wide, 50 cm deep, and 100.5 cm high, corresponding to approximately 44.5 x 19.7 x 39.6 inches.
