Axel Einar Hjorth cabinet
This cabinet is a rare model Lovö designed by Axel Einar Hjorth and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) in Sweden in 1932. It is constructed from solid pine, which has been stained to a warm, medium-brown tone that enhances the natural grain and texture of the wood. The surface displays a fine, even patina that has developed over time, with minor traces of wear consistent with age and use, giving it a rich and authentic character.
The cabinet features a rectilinear form with vertical planks creating a rhythmic façade. The doors are fitted with blackened iron hardware, including large strap hinges and a square lock plate with a key. These fittings contrast with the warm wood and contribute to the cabinet’s rustic, almost architectural presence. The plinth base is slightly recessed, providing a stable foundation and a balanced profile.
Inside, the cabinet is fitted with multiple shelves and two central drawers with carved wooden pulls, allowing for versatile storage. The craftsmanship is robust, with exposed wooden joinery and visible grain that speaks to Hjorth’s interest in honest, straightforward construction.
Axel Einar Hjorth was one of Sweden’s leading designers of the early 20th century and is well known for his work with Nordiska Kompaniet during the 1920s and 1930s. The Lovö series belongs to his celebrated group of sports cabin furniture, designed between 1932 and 1935, which sought to merge traditional Swedish rural carpentry with modern functionalism. These pieces were intended for leisure homes and embody a refined yet rustic aesthetic that is characteristic of Scandinavian design of the period.
The cabinet measures 103 cm wide, 45.5 cm deep, and 155.5 cm high (approximately 40.5 x 17.9 x 61.2 inches). Its combination of solid materials, visible joinery, and decorative iron fittings makes it a strong example of Hjorth’s Lovö series and of early modern Swedish cabin furniture.
