Axel Einar Hjorth cabinet
This rare cabinet, model Bertil, was designed by Axel Einar Hjorth and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet in Sweden in 1934. It exemplifies Hjorth’s refined approach to modern functional furniture, merging luxurious materials with strict geometry and architectural clarity. The piece reflects the designer’s transition from the neoclassical influences of the 1920s to a distinctly modern Scandinavian expression, characterized by purity of line and restrained ornamentation.
The cabinet is executed in birch and zebrano veneer, creating a striking visual rhythm through the contrasting tones and linear grain patterns of the exotic wood. The vertical direction of the veneer enhances the height and symmetry of the composition, while the darker base and legs ground the form visually. The cabinet stands on rounded, tapered legs, giving the structure a sense of balance and elevation. The front features two doors with integrated brass keyholes and locks, revealing a well-organized interior with adjustable shelves and small drawers, constructed with precision and functionality in mind.
The surface shows a deep, even patina, with only minor signs of age and use consistent with its 1930s origin. The craftsmanship and materials are of the highest quality, with the original Nordiska Kompaniet plaque still present, confirming its provenance and authenticity.
Axel Einar Hjorth (1888–1959) served as chief designer for Nordiska Kompaniet from 1927 to 1938. During this period, he developed furniture that combined modernist ideals with luxurious materials and precise detailing. The Bertil cabinet belongs to this creative era, where Hjorth’s designs were tailored for NK’s elite clientele and bespoke interiors. Pieces like this were made in limited numbers, showcasing the refined Swedish Art Deco aesthetic that preceded the later functionalist movement.
