Axel Einar Hjorth cabinet
This rare bar cabinet was designed by Axel Einar Hjorth and produced by the Swedish cabinetmaker Albin Johansson in 1927. The cabinet is crafted in richly grained birch, stained to a deep brown tone that enhances the natural figure of the wood. It stands on turned and fluted legs connected by a low shelf, lending the piece both stability and vertical elegance.
The front features a composition of panels with applied floral and urn motifs in relief, characteristic of the Swedish Grace period’s synthesis of classical inspiration and modern stylization. The carvings are executed with great precision and contrast in darkly stained details that give the surface depth and rhythm. The central section contains a pair of locking doors flanked by drawers and smaller compartments, revealing an interior fitted with shelves and small drawers in lighter birch, designed for practical storage and refined organization.
Axel Einar Hjorth (1888–1959) was one of Sweden’s leading designers during the interwar years, known for his refined balance between neoclassical elegance and modern functionality. His collaboration with skilled craftsmen such as Albin Johansson resulted in furniture of exceptional quality and attention to proportion and finish. This piece exemplifies Hjorth’s ability to integrate sculptural ornament with rational construction, a hallmark of the Swedish Grace movement that flourished in the late 1920s.
The cabinet is in good vintage condition with minor wear and signs of use consistent with age. The surface retains an appealing patina that emphasizes the depth and figure of the birch veneer.
