Axel Einar Hjorth Lovö armchairs

This very rare pair of armchairs, model Lovö, designed by Axel Einar Hjorth and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet in Sweden in 1932, stands as a significant example of early Scandinavian modern design rooted in both functionalism and traditional craftsmanship. Part of Hjorth’s Sportstugemöbler series, these chairs were originally conceived for the Swedish leisure movement, targeting country houses and vacation homes. The design reflects a harmonious blend of rustic influences with modernist simplicity, creating pieces that are simultaneously expressive and practical.

Constructed from acid-stained and oiled pine, the chairs exhibit a robust yet refined structure. The wood’s pronounced grain and natural patina, developed over nearly a century, highlight its sculptural qualities. A curved backrest, reinforced with wrought iron fittings, adds structural support while contributing to the chairs’ distinctive aesthetic. The original loose cushions remain intact, upholstered in woven textiles featuring an earthy-toned striped pattern that complements the warm tones of the pine and enhances the organic character of the design.

Axel Einar Hjorth (1888–1959), as chief designer at Nordiska Kompaniet from 1927 to 1938, played a pivotal role in shaping Swedish modernism. His Sportstugemöbler collection, including the Lovö model, uniquely integrates raw, primitive forms inspired by traditional Swedish craft with the clean lines and functionality of modernism. Although initially overlooked, these designs are now recognized as precursors to the widespread international appreciation of Scandinavian aesthetics in the post-war period.

The chairs are in very good condition, showing natural signs of wear, patina, and minor use consistent with their age, which contribute to their authenticity and historical value. Measuring 53 cm in width, 50 cm in depth, 80 cm in height, with a seat height of 46.5 cm (approximately 20.9 by 19.7 by 31.5 inches and 18.3 inches seat height), these armchairs are both collector’s items and functional design objects representing a key moment in Scandinavian furniture history.
