Axel Einar Hjorth dining chairs
This rare set of six “Utö” dining chairs was designed by Axel Einar Hjorth and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet in Sweden during the 1930s. Executed in acid-stained pine, the chairs exemplify Hjorth’s distinctive “Sportstugemöbler” series — furniture created for the Swedish archipelago’s summer houses that combined rustic simplicity with refined modernist craftsmanship.
Each chair displays Hjorth’s mastery of proportion and material: the slightly tapered legs and sculpted seat convey solidity and comfort, while the curved top rail and vertical back slats introduce rhythm and lightness. The visible grain and warm tone of the pine are accentuated by the acid staining, lending depth and a rich, tactile patina that has matured beautifully over time.
The Utö model captures the essence of Scandinavian design before mid-century modernism — grounded in craftsmanship, functional honesty, and an emotional connection to nature. Its timeless character makes it equally at home in minimalist, rustic, or contemporary interiors.
In good vintage condition with signs of age and a well-preserved surface patina.
