Axel Einar Hjorth (1888–1959) was a prominent Swedish architect and designer who served as chief designer at Nordiska Kompaniet from 1927 to 1938. While he is well known for creating refined and luxurious furniture for Swedish high society, Hjorth also played a critical role in developing a functional, rustic aesthetic through his Sportstugemöbler (sports cabin furniture) series. These collections, including Lovö, were crafted in the early 1930s for Sweden’s growing leisure class who sought high-quality, modern furniture tailored for summer homes and weekend retreats. The Lovö table typifies this approach with its straightforward yet sturdy construction, use of solid pine, and visible craftsmanship.
