Axel Einar Hjorth dining table
This rare dining table, model Lovö, was designed by Axel Einar Hjorth and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet in Sweden in 1932. Crafted from acid-stained pine, the table exhibits a deep, warm patina that accentuates the natural grain of the wood. The design features a rectangular tabletop supported by two vertical legs connected by a horizontal stretcher. The legs culminate in distinctive half-moon shaped feet, lending the piece a sculptural and architectural presence. The construction is solid and robust, with exposed joinery that highlights the craftsmanship typical of Hjorth’s work.
Axel Einar Hjorth (1888–1959) was a prominent Swedish designer known for his innovative contributions to furniture design. As head designer at Nordiska Kompaniet from the late 1920s to early 1940s, he played a pivotal role in shaping Swedish modernism. His Sportstugemöbler (“sports cabin furniture”) series, including the Lovö model, was developed to furnish Sweden’s growing number of summer homes and mountain retreats. These designs successfully combined functional modernist principles with traditional craftsmanship and rustic influences, securing a significant place in Scandinavian design history.
Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) was Sweden’s leading furniture manufacturer in the early 20th century. The company collaborated with notable designers to produce high-quality pieces that married modern aesthetics with durable materials. Hjorth’s work for NK remains highly sought after for its fusion of international modernism and distinctly Scandinavian materiality.
The table is in good vintage condition, displaying wear and patina consistent with its age. Its dimensions are 180 cm in width, 74 cm in depth, and 72 cm in height (approximately 70.9 by 29.1 by 28.3 inches).
