Axel Einar Hjorth library table
The Utö library or console table, designed by Axel Einar Hjorth and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet in Sweden in 1932, is a rare and distinctive example of Scandinavian functionalist furniture.
Constructed from acid-stained pine, the table exhibits a sculptural yet restrained aesthetic, characterized by its solid plank top and robust trestle-style legs. The base features broad, tapered supports that rest on substantial, rounded feet, lending the piece a grounded and architectural presence.
Axel Einar Hjorth (1888–1959) was a Swedish designer known for his innovative approach to furniture making, seamlessly integrating modernist principles with traditional craftsmanship. His work for Nordiska Kompaniet during the early 1930s includes a series of pieces inspired by both functionalist ideals and rustic Scandinavian materials.
The Utö series, named after one of the Stockholm archipelago islands, was designed for use in summer homes, emphasizing simple construction and the natural beauty of wood.
The table remains in well-preserved condition, with a rich patina that highlights the grain and texture of the pine. The acid-stained surface provides depth and warmth, complementing the clean geometric lines of the form.
The dimensions are 170 cm in width, 55 cm in depth, and 73.5 cm in height (66.9 x 21.7 x 28.9 inches).
