Axel Einar Hjorth Utö table
This rare library or console table, model Utö, was designed by Axel Einar Hjorth and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet in Sweden in 1932. The table is constructed from acid-stained pine, featuring a surface that showcases a pronounced wood grain enriched by a natural patina, which adds depth and character to the piece.
The design consists of a rectangular top supported by two trestle-style legs that taper into substantial block-like bases, providing both stability and a sculptural presence. The exposed grain and straightforward joinery emphasize the natural beauty of the wood, reflecting Hjorth’s philosophy of combining functional utility with refined aesthetics.
Axel Einar Hjorth was a prominent Swedish designer active in the early 20th century, notable for his work at Nordiska Kompaniet. His Utö series, designed for Swedish summer homes, exemplifies his commitment to natural materials and a balance of practical use and elegance. The design anticipates many characteristics of later Scandinavian modernism while retaining a handcrafted, rustic quality.
The table is in very good condition, maintaining a well-preserved surface with signs of natural age consistent with its vintage character.
