Axel Einar Hjorth Lovö table
Rare table model Lovö designed by Axel Einar Hjorth. Produced by Nordiska Kompaniet in Sweden.
Table model Lovö designed by Axel Einar Hjorth and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) in Sweden in the late 1930s. The piece is constructed entirely from solid pine and displays a restrained yet sculptural expression. The tabletop is square with softly chamfered edges, resting on a central pedestal formed by a vertical shaft intersected at its base by four symmetrically arranged, semi-circular stabilizing fins.
The surface reveals the natural grain and knots of the pine, with a warm amber tone that has deepened with age. Visible tool marks and wear indicate handwork and reflect the material honesty central to Hjorth’s rural-inspired furniture designs from this period. A pencil inscription on the underside, numbered 42137, matches a documented drawing dated 28 January 1939 in NK’s archive, identifying this specific configuration as model Lovö.
Axel Einar Hjorth served as chief architect at NK from 1927 to 1938 and is known for blending modernist sensibilities with traditional Swedish craft. His series of pine furniture, including Lovö, Utö, and Skoga, was intended for summer houses and leisure use, diverging from the urban Art Deco and international styles of his earlier work. This example remains in authentic vintage condition with surface marks, patina, and edge wear consistent with age and original finish.
