Axel Einar Hjorth attrib. table
This rare coffee table is attributed to Axel Einar Hjorth and was produced by Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) in Sweden during the 1930s. The table exemplifies Swedish Art Deco, combining bold geometric structuring with exquisite materiality and surface treatment.
The table features a circular top with a veneered surface composed of a radial-cut outer ring of Macassar ebony and a centrally inset roundel of richly grained birch burl, separated by a fine dark inlay. The Macassar veneer displays strong striped figuring in alternating bands of dark brown and amber, forming a sunburst pattern that radiates outward from the lighter central panel. This interplay of wood tones and directionally cut grain introduces depth and contrast to the otherwise restrained circular form.
The structure is supported by a single central column in black ebonized birch, which rises from a matching circular base also finished in a radial Macassar pattern. The pedestal transitions seamlessly into the footed base via a turned collar, balancing visual weight across vertical and horizontal planes. The lower base sits on four discreet bracket feet, giving the piece a sense of elevation while retaining mass and stability.
Axel Einar Hjorth (1888–1959) served as chief designer at Nordiska Kompaniet during the 1920s and 1930s and played a central role in defining Swedish modern furniture of the period. His output during this time bridged classicism, international modernism, and regional traditions. Hjorth’s Art Deco works, such as this table, are characterized by their rigorous geometry, symmetry, and expressive use of exotic veneers, often in symmetrical or radiating compositions that emphasized the material’s decorative qualities.
The condition of the table is excellent, with a well-preserved finish and minimal surface wear. The veneers show strong color retention and clear grain patterns, while the base remains structurally sound with no visible repairs or alterations. The craftsmanship and joinery are of high quality, typical of NK’s production standards during the period.
The dimensions are 90 cm in diameter and 60.5 cm in height, corresponding to approximately 35.4 inches in diameter and 23.8 inches in height.
