Axel Einar Hjorth mirror
This rare wall mirror, model “Record” was designed by Axel Einar Hjorth and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) in Sweden in 1932. The mirror features a circular form, with mirrored glass set into a stained wooden frame. Four equidistant nickel-plated metal brackets secure the mirror, integrated directly into the structural backing. This mounting system allows the mirror to float slightly off the wall, while the visible brackets add a refined mechanical detail.
The mirror measures 91 cm in diameter and has a depth of 3 cm (approximately 35.8 by 1.2 inches). Its minimalist design emphasizes geometric clarity and highlights the tactile qualities of the materials used. The shallow depth and precise edging lend the mirror an architectural presence, while the nickel-plated brackets create a subtle contrast with the dark-toned wood.
Axel Einar Hjorth, who served as chief designer at Nordiska Kompaniet from 1927 to 1938, was a key figure in shaping early Swedish modern design. His work from this period bridges neoclassical symmetry with emerging modernist minimalism. The Record mirror exemplifies his skill in distilling form to its essentials while preserving elegance through careful proportion, detail, and material interplay.
Nordiska Kompaniet was Sweden’s leading design institution in the early to mid-20th century, producing high-quality furniture and decorative objects in collaboration with prominent designers. Each piece from this era was assigned a unique model and serial number, with the original production plaque still present on this mirror’s reverse.
The mirror is in very good condition, showing minor surface wear on the frame and light age-related patina on the metal brackets. The mirrored glass remains clean and reflective, maintaining its original clarity and integrity.
