Information

This rare pair of armchairs, model 1522, was designed by Axel Larsson in 1961 and produced by Bodafors in Sweden. The design combines a sculptural oak frame with an upholstered seat and back in black vinyl, reflecting the modernist emphasis on both functional clarity and expressive form. The armrests are particularly striking, curving out in a fluid and organic line that contrasts with the otherwise rectilinear construction of the legs and frame.

The chairs feature a fully upholstered backrest and seat with button-tufted detailing, creating a slightly contoured surface for comfort. The black vinyl, accented with brass-colored studs along the edges, was a practical and modern material choice in the early 1960s, offering durability while complementing the warm tones of the oak. The armrests are shaped in one continuous flowing line, highlighting Larsson’s refined approach to integrating comfort with structural elegance.

Axel Larsson was a prominent Swedish architect and designer known for his work with Svenska Möbelfabrikerna Bodafors (SMF), where he created a wide range of high-quality furniture that balanced modern design ideals with traditional craftsmanship. His designs are recognized for their subtle sculptural qualities and for capturing the understated elegance characteristic of Scandinavian mid-century modernism. Bodafors, as one of Sweden’s major furniture producers during the 20th century, collaborated with leading designers to bring refined modern furniture into both public and private interiors.

These chairs remain in vintage condition, with signs of usage and visible wear on the vinyl. One of the seats shows damage in the form of tearing near the upholstery buttons, while the surfaces of the vinyl display marks consistent with long-term use. The oak frames, however, are structurally sound and show an appealing patina that emphasizes the natural grain and aging of the wood.

As an example of early 1960s Scandinavian design, the model 1522 armchairs combine practical material use with a distinctive sculptural quality. Their organic armrest design is particularly notable within Larsson’s body of work, representing the mid-century ambition to merge ergonomics, elegance, and modern production techniques.
