Axel Larsson beds
This very rare pair of single beds was designed by Axel Larsson and produced by Svenska Möbelfabrikerna Bodafors in Sweden during the 1940s. These beds exemplify the transitional period between Swedish Grace and the rise of functionalist Scandinavian modernism, merging artisanal craftsmanship with restrained forms and high-quality materials.
The frames are made from solid mahogany, a hardwood known for its warm reddish-brown hue and subtle ribbon-like grain patterns. The wood has been carefully finished to a semi-gloss sheen, which enhances the depth of color and natural chatoyance. The beds have a clean rectangular profile softened by rounded corners and gracefully sculpted edges, especially evident in the recessed mattress frame and the gently curved upper corners of both the footboards and headboards.
Each bed stands on four slightly tapered mahogany legs, accented with polished brass ferrules and flat circular feet. The brass details introduce a refined contrast in material and were characteristic of luxurious Scandinavian furnishings from the early to mid-20th century. These brass elements also impart a subtle Art Deco influence, reflecting Larsson’s earlier stylistic inspirations.
The mattresses are upholstered either in original or period-appropriate blue jacquard fabric featuring a stylized floral and geometric repeat pattern. They fit precisely within the bed frames, resting inside recessed wooden rails that ensure stable and seamless integration.
