Information

This very rare pair of single beds was designed by Axel Larsson and produced by Svenska Möbelfabrikerna Bodafors in Sweden during the 1940s. These beds exemplify the transitional period between Swedish Grace and the rise of functionalist Scandinavian modernism, merging artisanal craftsmanship with restrained forms and high-quality materials.

The frames are made from solid mahogany, a hardwood known for its warm reddish-brown hue and subtle ribbon-like grain patterns. The wood has been carefully finished to a semi-gloss sheen, which enhances the depth of color and natural chatoyance. The beds have a clean rectangular profile softened by rounded corners and gracefully sculpted edges, especially evident in the recessed mattress frame and the gently curved upper corners of both the footboards and headboards.

Each bed stands on four slightly tapered mahogany legs, accented with polished brass ferrules and flat circular feet. The brass details introduce a refined contrast in material and were characteristic of luxurious Scandinavian furnishings from the early to mid-20th century. These brass elements also impart a subtle Art Deco influence, reflecting Larsson’s earlier stylistic inspirations.

The mattresses are upholstered either in original or period-appropriate blue jacquard fabric featuring a stylized floral and geometric repeat pattern. They fit precisely within the bed frames, resting inside recessed wooden rails that ensure stable and seamless integration.

Axel Larsson (1898–1975) was a prominent Swedish designer who worked extensively with Bodafors and other leading manufacturers. His oeuvre is noted for blending traditional craftsmanship with modern aesthetics. His furniture consistently balances precision, functionality, and visual elegance, whether intended for public or private use.

Svenska Möbelfabrikerna Bodafors was one of Sweden’s foremost furniture producers in the 20th century, recognized for high manufacturing standards and collaborations with prominent designers. The company played a key role in evolving Swedish furniture design from the decorative styles of the early century to the minimal and rational forms characteristic of mid-century modernism.

Each bed measures 107 cm in width, 215 cm in depth, and 78 cm in height (approximately 42.1 x 84.6 x 30.7 inches). The mattresses measure 100 x 200 x 20 cm (approximately 39.4 x 78.7 x 7.9 inches). Both beds are in excellent vintage condition, with well-preserved wood surfaces and clean, polished brass details.
