Information

This rare stoneware bowl, model number 20716, was designed by Axel Salto and produced by Royal Copenhagen in Denmark in 1936. It represents one of Salto’s signature explorations into organic and dynamic ceramic form, expressing both sculptural vitality and refined craftsmanship characteristic of his work for Royal Copenhagen during the interwar years.

The bowl features a deeply incised surface with a repeating chevron or leaf-like pattern that accentuates its rounded contour. The textured exterior is finished in variegated tones of earthy brown, moss green, and muted grey, achieved through Salto’s mastery of reduction glazes and subtle layering of color. The interior presents a contrasting glaze field of mottled cream and dark brown with soft green transitions, creating a sense of depth and fluidity. This interplay between structure and glaze exemplifies Salto’s concept of “vitalism” where the ceramic surface appears almost alive in its movement and variation.

The base bears the impressed Royal Copenhagen hallmark, Salto’s monogram, and model number, confirming its authenticity and production within the artist’s mature period. The condition is good vintage, with only minor wear consistent with careful age, and a well-preserved glaze surface that retains its original luster and tactile quality.

Axel Salto (1889–1961) was one of Denmark’s most influential ceramic artists, celebrated for his innovative sculptural approach and experimental glazing techniques. His works often drew inspiration from nature’s growth forms—buds, fruits, and shells—translating them into complex surface structures. Salto’s collaboration with Royal Copenhagen began in the early 1930s and established a new expressive language within Scandinavian ceramics, merging fine art sensibility with utilitarian tradition.

This bowl stands as a representative example of Scandinavian modern ceramics’ fusion of organic design, technical precision, and naturalistic aesthetics. It reflects a moment when Danish studio ceramics reached a high level of international recognition for their craftsmanship and artistic ambition.

Diameter 24 cm (9.4 in), height 14 cm (5.5 in).
