Bent Karlby table lamp
This table lamp was designed by Bent Karlby and produced by Lyfa in Sweden during the 1950s. It features a combination of brass and teak, materials commonly favored in Scandinavian modern design for their durability and visual warmth. The lamp’s conical brass shade is designed to direct light downward, while the slender brass stem incorporates a teak-wrapped lower section, offering a subtle contrast between the metals and wood. The circular brass base provides stability while maintaining a clean, minimalist profile.
The brass surfaces show an aged patina consistent with natural oxidation over time, adding character to the piece. The interior of the shade is painted in a lighter tone, which enhances light reflection and brightness. An integrated socket and switch are located discreetly beneath the shade, contributing to the lamp’s streamlined aesthetic.
Bent Karlby was a Danish designer known for his expertise in lighting design, particularly through his work with Lyfa, a leading Danish lighting manufacturer of the mid-20th century. His designs are recognized for their geometric clarity, clean lines, and thoughtful use of materials, resulting in lighting that is both functional and visually refined.
Lyfa, established in Denmark, was celebrated for producing modernist lighting fixtures with high craftsmanship standards. Their collaborations with designers like Karlby helped define Scandinavian modernism in lighting, and many of their pieces remain highly sought after by collectors today.
This lamp reflects mid-century Scandinavian modern principles, emphasizing material authenticity, functional design, and simple geometric forms.
The lamp measures approximately 37 cm in diameter and 49 cm in height (14.6 x 19.3 inches).
