Bertil Brisborg ceiling lamps
This rare pair of ceiling lamps was designed by Bertil Brisborg and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) in Sweden during the 1960s. The lamps embody mid-century Scandinavian lighting design, presenting a restrained yet elegant aesthetic marked by quality materials and balanced proportions.
Each lamp features a handblown glass shade in a vertically elongated form that gently tapers toward the base. The glass is decorated with a diagonal swirl pattern formed by alternating bands of clear and frosted surfaces. When illuminated, this pattern softly diffuses the light and creates a subtle striped effect. The shade is suspended by three delicate brass chains connected to a polished brass mounting collar, which secures the glass and attaches to the central fitting. A brass ceiling cup completes the fixture, offering a cohesive contrast to the white-toned glass.
The light hangs from a central cord and is stabilized by three adjustable chains that provide both balance and decorative detail. The overall silhouette is tall and slender, giving the lamps a sculptural presence even when unlit.
Bertil Brisborg (1903–1990), an architect and designer, was closely associated with Nordiska Kompaniet for many decades. His work spanned furniture, lighting, and interior architecture, characterized by refined modernist designs that combine functional clarity with subtle decoration. Nordiska Kompaniet, founded in 1902 in Stockholm, played a key role in the development of Swedish modern design, serving both as a retailer and a manufacturer collaborating with leading Scandinavian designers.
This pair of lamps is in good vintage condition, showing light wear consistent with age and use. The brass components exhibit a naturally developed patina, while the glass is intact without structural damage. The lamps have been restored and rewired for contemporary use.
