Bertil Fridhagen dressing table
This rare dressing table was designed by Bertil Fridhagen and produced by Bodafors in Sweden in 1958. The piece is crafted from teak and beech with brass detailing, exemplifying the refined elegance and precision characteristic of Swedish modern furniture from the late 1950s. The combination of warm teak veneer with lighter beech structural elements creates a subtle tonal contrast, emphasizing the sculptural clarity of Fridhagen’s design.
The table features a rectangular top with a softly curved front edge concealing two drawers, each with a keyhole lock. The drawers are flanked by rounded corner posts that continue into the base structure, joined by stretcher supports that enhance stability and visual balance. A distinctive pivoting circular mirror, framed in brass, is mounted on a brass support rising from the back edge of the tabletop. The design is both practical and refined, with thoughtful proportions and detailing that highlight Fridhagen’s background as a cabinetmaker.
The craftsmanship displays Bodafors’ high production standards, visible in the precision of the joinery, the finely grained teak veneer, and the careful integration of brass fittings. The pivoting side compartment, mounted with brass hardware, adds functional storage and an element of asymmetry that enriches the overall composition.
This dressing table is in excellent vintage condition with small signs of use consistent with age. It represents a synthesis of modern Swedish design ideals—simplicity, function, and material integrity—executed with a high degree of craftsmanship.
