Bertil Fridhagen

Bertil Fridhagen (1899–1968) was a Swedish furniture designer and interior architect active during the mid-20th century. He is best known for his work in upholstered seating, particularly sofas and lounge chairs designed with a strong emphasis on comfort, craftsmanship, and proportion. Fridhagen’s designs often combine traditional upholstery techniques with the cleaner lines associated with Scandinavian modernism.

Biography

Fridhagen was trained in Sweden and established himself as a designer during the 1930s and 1940s, a period when Swedish furniture production was expanding to meet the needs of both domestic and public interiors. His work developed within the context of Swedish modernism, where furniture was expected to balance functional requirements with careful material selection and durable construction.

He is most closely associated with the manufacturer Bodafors, one of Sweden’s leading furniture producers during the mid-20th century. Through this collaboration, Fridhagen designed a range of seating furniture that became widely distributed across Sweden, including living room suites, armchairs, and daybeds. His designs were typically characterized by well-padded upholstery, supportive seat structures, and modest decorative detailing, reflecting a focus on long-term usability.
