Børge Mogensen bench
This very rare bench was designed by Børge Mogensen and produced by master cabinetmaker Erhard Rasmussen in Denmark during the 1950s. Executed in solid oak with a woven cane seat, the piece demonstrates Mogensen’s dedication to functional simplicity and honest material expression—hallmarks of the Danish modern movement.
The bench is constructed with a sturdy rectangular oak frame resting on sled-style legs, providing both strength and visual equilibrium. The woven cane seat is executed in an intricate herringbone pattern, displaying exceptional craftsmanship and an appreciation for tactile detail. The natural variations in tone and texture of the cane complement the warm hue of the oak, resulting in a balanced and harmonious composition.
This model was presented at the Danish Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibitions in 1955 and 1963, occasions that highlighted the collaboration between leading designers and master craftsmen in shaping postwar Danish design. Mogensen’s design philosophy—rooted in functionality, human comfort, and material integrity—is clearly evident in this piece. The refined geometry and absence of superfluous ornamentation reveal an architectural clarity, while the handwoven surface adds a natural softness.
The bench remains in excellent vintage condition, with small signs of age and a beautiful patina consistent with its history. A minor imperfection in the cane attests to its original craftsmanship.
