Børge Mogensen desk
This rare freestanding desk, model BM 76-2, was designed in 1965 by Børge Mogensen and produced by P. Lauritzen & Son in Denmark. It is crafted from solid oak with brass details, a combination typical of Mogensen’s refined yet practical aesthetic that characterizes Danish modern design of the mid-20th century.
The oak wood displays a warm, golden brown hue, with a visible and expressive grain pattern across the flat surfaces and drawers. The integrated brass handles provide a subtle metallic contrast, emphasizing the craftsmanship and understated luxury of the piece. The patina on both wood and metal elements gives the desk a distinguished character, with surface wear and small marks consistent with careful use over time.
The design features a broad rectangular top supported by two cabinet pedestals on either side, each fitted with drawers for storage. The left pedestal contains three drawers, while the right features a smaller top drawer over a deeper filing drawer. The frame construction is clean and linear, with subtle joinery details visible at the corners. A horizontal stretcher connects the two sides for additional stability, maintaining an open and airy structure beneath the work surface.
The condition is good vintage, showing signs of usage that include small scratches and minor wear on the oak surfaces, as well as aged patina on the brass hardware, all contributing to the authenticity and historical value of the piece.
Børge Mogensen was one of the leading figures in Danish modernism, renowned for his focus on functionality, simplicity, and durable craftsmanship. His designs often emphasize practicality without sacrificing elegance, aiming to create furniture suited to modern living.
The BM 76-2 desk exemplifies Mogensen’s commitment to restrained, honest design. Its blend of utility and refined detailing makes it an excellent representation of Scandinavian mid-century modern principles.
The dimensions of the desk are 190.5 cm in width, 83.5 cm in depth, and 70.5 cm in height, corresponding approximately to 75 inches wide, 32.87 inches deep, and 27.76 inches high.
