Børge Mogensen side table
This is a rare model 149 side table designed by Børge Mogensen in 1953 and produced by Søborg Møbelfabrik in Denmark. The table is crafted in solid teak with rich, warm reddish-brown tones and a fine, straight to mildly figured grain. The rectangular top features softly rounded edges and is joined with visible brass hinges, revealing Mogensen’s characteristic blend of functional detailing and refined craftsmanship. Below the tabletop, two shallow drawers with gently curved fronts provide discreet storage, while a lower shelf with a subtle upward curve at the sides offers additional surface space. The table stands on four round tapered legs, a hallmark of mid-century Scandinavian furniture design.
The condition is good vintage, showing signs of age and use consistent with its history. The teak has developed an even patina, with light surface wear and small marks that attest to its decades of service. The brass fittings retain a warm, aged tone, complementing the deep hues of the wood. All structural joints remain solid, and the drawers function smoothly.
Børge Mogensen (1914–1972) was one of Denmark’s most influential furniture designers, known for his work in creating democratic, functional designs for everyday life. He trained as a cabinetmaker and later studied at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts and the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Mogensen’s philosophy emphasized honest materials, clarity of form, and functional durability—principles clearly reflected in this side table. Søborg Møbelfabrik, established in 1890, was a highly regarded Danish furniture producer that collaborated with leading designers to create pieces of exceptional quality, contributing significantly to the reputation of Danish modernism internationally.
In stylistic terms, this piece represents the essence of mid-century Scandinavian design—restrained, well-proportioned, and crafted with attention to detail. The combination of teak, clean lines, and functional elements aligns with the movement’s focus on simplicity, practicality, and natural materials. It works both as a functional side table and as a collectable example of Danish furniture heritage.
