Børge Mogensen side tables
This rare pair of side tables or low benches, model 5273, was designed by Børge Mogensen and produced by Fredericia Stolefabrik in Denmark during the 1950s. Each piece features a solid oak frame with a natural matte finish that highlights the warm, golden tones and straight grain of the wood. The rectangular tops are formed by tightly woven cane inserts in a basketweave pattern, marked by strong geometric articulation. The cane edges are carefully wrapped around the oak frame corners, demonstrating meticulous craftsmanship.
The design maintains low, compact proportions consistent with Mogensen’s functionalist philosophy, emphasizing utility, honest materials, and timeless simplicity. These pieces serve interchangeably as side tables, stools, or benches, offering versatile functionality suited for both domestic and public environments. The slightly rounded top corners and square legs, supported by a low apron, provide both structural stability and visual balance.
Børge Mogensen (1914–1972) was a seminal figure in Danish modern design, celebrated for his humanistic approach and deep respect for traditional cabinetmaking. As head of design at Fredericia Stolefabrik beginning in 1955, Mogensen emphasized rigorous simplicity and practical durability. Fredericia’s production under his direction was characterized by fine woodworking and high-quality materials, aligning closely with the core values of the Danish modern movement.
This pair of side tables remains in very good original condition, showing minor signs of age and patina from careful use. The cane is intact and tightly woven, and the oak frames are structurally sound without significant wear or damage. Each piece measures 69.5 cm wide, 46 cm deep, and 35 cm high, approximately 27.4 inches wide, 18.1 inches deep, and 13.8 inches high.
