Børge Mogensen sideboard
This rare sideboard, model BM57, designed by Børge Mogensen and produced by P. Lauritsen & Son in Denmark in 1957, embodies the designer’s philosophy of functional simplicity combined with exceptional craftsmanship. Constructed from solid oak with a natural finish, the piece highlights the wood’s fine grain and warmth, offering both durability and timeless appeal.
The sideboard’s rectangular form rests on a subtly elevated frame supported by squared legs, which lends the piece a sense of lightness while maintaining structural integrity. The front comprises four symmetrically arranged doors divided into two compartments, each equipped with original brass hinges showing a well-developed patina. The discreet handles maintain the understated and minimalist aesthetic typical of Mogensen’s work.
Inside, the sideboard features adjustable shelves and sliding drawers designed to optimize storage efficiency. The drawers include recessed finger pulls, emphasizing Mogensen’s preference for clean lines and functional detailing. This interior layout caters to a variety of uses, from storing tableware and textiles to organizing office supplies.
The sideboard is preserved in very good vintage condition, showing minor wear consistent with age and use. The superior craftsmanship of P. Lauritsen & Son is evident in the precise joinery and use of high-quality materials, which ensure the piece’s longevity.
Børge Mogensen was a seminal figure in Danish modernism, known for his pragmatic and human-centered approach to furniture design. His work drew heavily on Shaker ideals and traditional cabinetmaking techniques, producing furniture that balances aesthetics with practical everyday use. The BM57 sideboard remains a prime example of this ethos, combining simplicity, quality, and enduring functionality.
