Børge Mogensen sofa
This three-seat sofa, model 2213, was introduced in 1963 by Børge Mogensen and remains in production through Fredericia Stolefabrik in Denmark. Its frame is constructed of solid teak, the wood’s warm honey tones and straight grain lending a subtle visual warmth. The legs are inset slightly from the sofa’s body, creating a delicate shadow line that lightens the piece’s overall mass and emphasizes its architectural proportions.
The seating comprises three loose cushions for the seat, back, and sides, each generously filled with resilient foam and upholstered in thick, vegetable-tanned leather. The cognac-brown hide displays a pronounced patina, with natural creasing, subtle darkening in high-contact areas, and small surface variations that testify to both the leather’s durability and the piece’s age. The cushions are over-filled enough to maintain their shape, yet yield gently under weight, providing deep, enveloping comfort.
The sofa’s rectilinear silhouette is defined by broad, flat armrests that extend the full depth of the piece, offering ample support for resting arms or placing small items. The backrest rises to match the arm height, forming a clean, uninterrupted line that contributes to the sofa’s minimalist aesthetic. All leather panels are tensioned evenly around the cushion cores, and seams are carefully aligned, reflecting Mogensen’s commitment to craftsmanship and functional clarity.
Børge Mogensen (1914–1972) designed the 2213 for his own home in Gentofte, Denmark, with the intention of creating a piece that balanced formal restraint with everyday usability. His work bridges traditional joinery and modernist simplicity; here, the visible teak frame and loose upholstery panels express both honesty of materials and flexibility of use. Fredericia Stolefabrik’s enduring collaboration with Mogensen ensures that production methods remain faithful to the original standards, combining machine-precision cutting with hand-applied finishes.
This particular example is in good vintage condition. The leather shows consistent wear patterns and darkening on the seat surfaces and armrests, without tears or repairs. The teak base is structurally sound, the oil finish mellowed to a soft sheen with only light surface scuffs. All cushions retain their original fill and shape, and the sofa’s overall stability remains uncompromised.
