Börje Johanson dining table

This very rare and striking dining table was designed by Swedish designer Börje Johanson and produced by Johanson Design in Markaryd, Sweden during the 1960s. It stands as a remarkable example of Scandinavian mid-century modernism, blending luxurious materials with bold sculptural contrast.

The table features a round top made from honed black marble, richly veined with white and grey streaks that run through the dark surface. The marble is finely finished with slightly beveled edges and a matte luster, which highlights the natural crystalline structure and depth of the material. The top rests on a single columnar pedestal base crafted from brass, which flares out into a broad circular foot in a classic tulip form. The brass has aged gracefully, developing a warm, natural patina and subtle textural variation that enhances the vintage character of the piece.

The interplay between the dense, monolithic appearance of the black marble and the metallic gleam of the brass creates a striking visual juxtaposition. The round top and central pedestal offer optimal seating functionality, eliminating corner obstructions and enhancing the table’s usability.
