Box
This round lidded wooden box was handcrafted in Sweden during the 1950s. Constructed from solid pine, the box exemplifies traditional Scandinavian bentwood craftsmanship, particularly evident in the intricately woven root stitching that secures the bent side walls. The lid is gently domed and features an integrated sculpted handle, also crafted from pine, which maintains the natural continuity of the form.
The surface of the box reveals a pronounced and expressive wood grain, displaying warm golden tones typical of aged pine. A smooth, matte finish highlights the organic texture of the wood while preserving its natural appearance. On the underside, a branded signature is present, though the designer’s identity remains unknown.
The overall design draws from historical Scandinavian craft traditions, such as tine boxes and Shaker-inspired bentwood containers. However, the clean lines and minimalist aesthetic reflect a modernist sensibility consistent with mid-century Scandinavian design principles, blending functional utility with understated elegance.
The box is in very good condition, showing only minor signs of age and use that indicate careful handling over the decades. Its dimensions measure 33.5 cm in diameter and 17 cm in height, corresponding to approximately 13.2 inches wide and 6.7 inches high.
