Carl Auböck wastebasket
This rare wastebasket was designed by Carl Auböck and produced in Austria. It was retailed by Illums Bolighus in Denmark, known for its curated selection of high-quality design objects. The piece features a cylindrical body crafted from thick black leather, hand-stitched with contrasting white thread along the top and bottom rims. The exterior is minimally adorned, highlighting the natural character of the leather surface, which shows light patina and minor signs of age.
On one side of the wastebasket, solid brass ring handle is mounted through stitched leather tabs. The brass is left unpolished, with visible surface wear and oxidation that lends an aged, authentic character. These details enhance the basket’s refined utilitarian aesthetic and emphasize the tactile contrast between the soft leather and metal components.
The dimensions are 25 cm in diameter and 30 cm in height (9.84 x 11.81 inches). The piece is in excellent vintage condition, with light, even wear consistent with careful use and age. This item represents the functional elegance and handcrafted quality typical of Carl Auböck’s mid-century design work.
