Bruno Mathsson easy chairs

This rare pair of easy chairs, model “Eva” was designed by Bruno Mathsson and produced by Karl Mathsson in Värnamo, Sweden, in 1968. The chairs feature frames made from laminated birch, skillfully shaped into organic, flowing forms that ergonomically support the body. The seats and backrests are constructed from the original leather webbing, tightly woven to create a structure that balances durability with flexibility. The armrests follow the natural curve of the frame, reinforcing the visual flow of the design while enhancing user comfort.

Bruno Mathsson, a Swedish designer and architect, played a pivotal role in Scandinavian modernism through his focus on ergonomics, organic materials, and lightweight constructions. His furniture aimed to adapt to the natural contours of the human body rather than imposing rigid postures. The “Eva” model is a clear manifestation of this philosophy, blending natural materials with sculptural, minimalist aesthetics.

Karl Mathsson, founded by Bruno’s father, was a Swedish furniture manufacturer known for its expert craftsmanship in bentwood furniture. The company pioneered laminated wood bending techniques, enabling the production of elegant, strong, and lightweight designs that are characteristic of mid-century Scandinavian furniture.

These chairs stand as quintessential examples of mid-century Scandinavian design, balancing precise craftsmanship, functional ergonomics, and refined aesthetics. The original patinated leather webbing pairs harmoniously with the warm tones of the birch frames, adding depth and character to the overall composition.

Each chair measures approximately 60 centimeters in width, 69 centimeters in depth, and 84 centimeters in height, with a seat height of 38 centimeters. In imperial measurements, this corresponds to 23.6 by 27.2 by 33.1 inches, with a seat height of 15 inches. The pair is preserved in good vintage condition, with the leather showing natural wear consistent with its age.
