Bruno Mathsson side table
This rare side or magazine table was designed by Bruno Mathsson and produced by Firma Karl Mathsson in Värnamo, Sweden, in 1976. The piece reflects Mathsson’s commitment to functional refinement and organic form, combining his mastery of bentwood with a rational approach to modern living environments.
The table features a rectangular top in Karelian birch with a beautifully figured surface showing deep, natural patterns typical of this rare Nordic wood. The light honey tone of the birch contrasts harmoniously with the integrated white-painted metal compartments beneath, designed for magazines or storage. These compartments are recessed within cutouts in the tabletop, creating a sculptural rhythm that is both decorative and practical. The curved beech legs are steam-bent in Mathsson’s signature technique, providing a sense of lightness and fluid continuity.
Bruno Mathsson (1907–1988) was one of Sweden’s most influential modernist designers and architects. His work is characterized by ergonomic precision, innovative bentwood construction, and a sensitivity to natural materials. Produced by Firma Karl Mathsson, the family company established by his father, this piece embodies the height of Swedish postwar craftsmanship and the seamless integration of structure and material.
The table is in good vintage condition with small signs of age and use. The natural patina of the birch surface and the light wear on the metal elements contribute to its authenticity and charm. This is a quintessential example of Scandinavian modern design, balancing functionality, craftsmanship, and aesthetic purity.
