Bruno Mathsson side table
This rare side table, designed by Bruno Mathsson, was produced by Firma Karl Mathsson in Värnamo, Sweden, during the 1940s. It is a characteristic example of Mathsson’s elegant modernist design language, which combines technical innovation with organic form. The table is constructed from laminated pine and birch, showcasing the natural warmth and texture of the wood, and is topped with a later added clear, textured glass surface that enhances both protection and visual interest.
The table has a slender, rectangular top with gently rounded corners and softly chamfered edges. The grain of the pine is clearly visible and provides a lively horizontal pattern across the surface. The tabletop rests upon four gracefully curved solid birch legs that transition seamlessly from the underframe. The legs are steam-bent, a hallmark of Mathsson’s exploration of ergonomic and structural efficiency, and their outward curve lends the table a sense of lightness and movement.
This piece is in good vintage condition. The wood retains a rich honey-colored patina consistent with age and careful use, with minor wear and surface marks appropriate for its period. The later glass top is free from significant scratches or chips and sits cleanly upon the wooden surface.
Bruno Mathsson (1907–1988) was a pioneering Swedish designer and architect, renowned for his contributions to modern Scandinavian furniture. He is celebrated for his functional yet graceful forms and for his pioneering use of laminated wood techniques. His work reflects a deep understanding of ergonomics, inspired by studies of human posture and comfort. Mathsson’s designs gained international recognition and remain influential within the canon of 20th-century design.
Firma Karl Mathsson, founded by Bruno’s father Karl Mathsson, was the family-owned firm that produced many of Bruno Mathsson’s early and iconic works. The firm’s output during the mid-20th century contributed significantly to the international visibility of Swedish modern design.
