Information

This is a rare highboard cabinet attributed to Carl-Axel Acking and produced by the renowned Swedish department store and furniture manufacturer Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) in 1949. Crafted in a combination of mahogany and oak, the piece features clean, rectilinear lines and a strong architectural presence, exemplifying Swedish functionalism and the design clarity associated with mid-century Scandinavian furniture.

The cabinet structure is composed of a dual-compartment upper case with sliding tambour doors, offering concealed shelving for versatile storage. Below the main storage unit, the design includes three pull-out drawers with original brass handles, adding material contrast and a subtle decorative element. The tambour doors are formed from narrow vertical wooden slats, creating a rhythmical texture and a sculptural surface that catches light and shadow with refinement.

The cabinet stands elevated on a sturdy, open frame of rounded legs connected by box stretchers, a configuration that gives the piece both visual lightness and structural integrity. The wood has developed a rich, warm golden-brown patina over time, and its surface shows minor wear consistent with age and use, contributing to its character and authenticity. The internal Nordiska Kompaniet inventory brass plaque and impressed badge confirm its provenance and manufacturing origin.

Carl-Axel Acking was a Swedish architect and designer active primarily in the mid-20th century, known for his sophisticated approach to functionalism and elegant simplicity in furniture and interiors. His works often balanced formality with warmth and are now considered among the highlights of Scandinavian design. Nordiska Kompaniet, established in 1902, was Sweden’s foremost luxury department store and a central figure in promoting modern Swedish design through its furniture workshop. The collaboration between Acking and NK represents a pivotal moment in Sweden’s postwar design history.
